The future of in-flight service trolleys

As part of his bachelor’s graduation project, Patrick Loh, a former Pilotfish industrial design intern, developed a new concept for a smart airline trolley that is destined to make the everyday work of cabin crew members easier and more efficient. The SYNC concept is a trolley that uses new technologies in order to not only simplify serving procedures during flights, but also to increase the safety of trolleys and products stored within.
The idea was sparked during Patrick’s time at Pilotfish while working together with his mentor, Design Director Sungchul Yang. With the help and guidance of Pilotfish as well as his professors at the University of Wuppertal, Patrick turned his vision into a complex research and design project.

Identifying some of the most important issues associated with airline trolleys, the research phase of this project included interviews and in-flight observation with some of the most important airlines in Germany, such as Lufthansa, as well as Gate Gourmet, a catering company that provides in-flight meals, and Spiriant, one of the world’s leading suppliers of in-flight equipment and logistics.
